Prevalence of Toxigenic Fungi in Common Medicinal Herbs, Spices and Food Materials
Out of 65 medicinal herbs and spices screened, 60 were contaminated while 5 were free from fungal contamination. Analysis revealed that 45.31% of the samples have a fungal load above 1×10 cfu/g which is the permissible limit set by World Health Organization. A total of 191 fungi were isolated in which Aspergillus and Penicillium were the predominant microorganism. Among the various fungal...
متن کاملPrevalence of toxigenic fungi in common medicinal herbs and spices in India
Mycotoxins are unavoidable contaminants of food grains, feeds, medicinal herbs, and spices, posing as health threat to animals and humans. The objective of this study was to screen medicinal herbs and spices for fungi and mycotoxin contamination and evaluate their safety. Sixty-three samples were examined for fungal contamination and fungal load determined using standard microbiological method....
متن کاملGamma radiation against toxigenic fungi in food, medicinal and aromatic herbs
Practices of harvesting, handling and production may cause additional contamination and microbial growth. In fact, bacteria and fungi occur naturally as a microflora of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Microbial purity is an important aspect of wholesome products, considering that medicinal plants are often collected from wild sources. These products are sold in open-air markets, and most toxigeni...
متن کاملToxigenic fungi in food.
Forty-five fungal isolates from moldy supermarket foods were tested for toxicity to brine shrimp, and twenty-two of these isolates were subsequently tested for toxicity to chicken embryos. Highly toxigenic fungi were Cladosporium sphaerospermum from a bakery product, Fusarium oxysporum from carrots, F. solani from cabbage, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium corylophilum from bread, P. cyclopium ...
متن کاملToxigenic thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi.
Twenty-three isolates of fungi, representing 13 thermophilic and thermotolerant species, were bioassayed for toxigenicity to brine shrimp, chicken embryos, and rats. Thirteen isolates representing nine genera were highly toxic to at least two of the three systems. Seven additional isolates of five genera were slightly toxic.
